Article of the leading specialists of Pluton JSC V.I. Kapustin, I.P. Li, A.V. Shumanov was published in the journal “Journal of Technical Physics”.
The electronic structure of barium oxide crystallites, which determines the emission properties of both metal-porous and scandalous cathodes, has been studied by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, electron energy loss characteristic spectroscopy, and optical spectroscopy. It is established that other elements (calcium, aluminum, scandium, tungsten), which are part of cathode materials, dissolve in barium oxide, significantly affecting its electronic structure and, accordingly, on emission properties. The results of the research made it possible to formulate ideas about the physical and physicochemical mechanisms of the influence of scandium on the decrease in the work function of scandalous cathodes in comparison with cathodes of other types.
